On Sunday night, ‘American Idol’ ended its 21st season with a three-hour finale that featured star-studded performances, emotional tributes, and a nail-biting winner announcement. As the final three contestants – Iam Tongi, Megan Danielle, and Colin Stough – took the stage for the last time to win America’s votes, months of auditions, challenges, and eliminations had come to an end.

The Final Three of American Idol Season 21

The final three contestants performed two songs to showcase their talents and personalities. Guest mentor Keith Urban chose one, and another was dedicated to their hometowns. Additionally, they performed original songs that they co-wrote with professional songwriters.

Greetings, I’m Tongi

The 18-year-old high school student from Kahuku, Hawaii, impressed the judges and the audience with his smooth vocals and charismatic stage presence. Urban’s “Making Memories of Us” and Kolohe Kai’s “Cool Down” were his mentor and hometown songs, respectively. Additionally, he performed a touching rendition of “I’ll Be Seeing You”, which he had written for his deceased father. Later, he joined James Blunt in a duet of “Monsters”, about overcoming personal demons.

Megan Danielle

During her performance, Megan Danielle, a 21-year-old server from Douglasville, Georgia, displayed her powerful voice and emotional delivery. Her mentor and hometown songs were Urban’s “God Whispered Your Name” and Journey’s “Faithfully.” Julia Michaels co-wrote “I’m Not Ready,” which she performed as well. Kylie Minogue and she later performed a disco-infused version of “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”.

Colin Stough

His song choices showcased Colin Stough’s country roots and guitar skills, a 23-year-old construction worker from Nashville, Tennessee. For his mentor and hometown songs, he sang Urban’s “Blue Ain’t Your Color” and Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey.” In addition, he performed an original song with Luke Bryan, “Country Boy.” In addition, he performed a rockin’ rendition of “Keep On Loving You” with REO Speedwagon.

Final Two

Ryan Seacrest announced the results of America’s vote after the final three performances. There were two contestants who made it to the final round: Iam Tongi and Megan Danielle. In third place, Colin Stough was eliminated.

Afterwards, the final two contestants performed their possible coronation songs, which they had also co-written with professional songwriters.

A heartfelt ballad written by Iam Tongi and Calum Scott, “You Are The Reason”, was performed. He displayed his vocal range and emotional connection to the lyrics in the song.
